My Comments:
1. I greatly disagree with these comments, even though Hughe's work is simple it has a lot of meaning to it. The problem that these critics had was finding the meaning so they felt that his poetry was pointless. 2. I also have respect for Hughe's and his poetry, just as Miller does. I feel that his poetry brings out the truth of what life was like when he wrote his poetry, I feel that he had a tremendous amount of courage to write his poetry considering the time period in which he wrote it. 3. In someways I agree with Hansberry's thoughts but I feel that the poem relates to anyone who has a dream and is willing to raise their dream to its full potential. |
Critics Comments:
1. In Arnold Rampersad and David Roessel's edition of Collected Poems of Langston Hughes they stated that Hughe's approach to poetry was far to simple and unlearned. They also stated that his work was so art less that they woundered if it was even poetry at all. 2. In Jason W. Miller's book, he has a chapter called "Poetry as Counternarritive", in this chapter he expresses his respect for Hughe's poetry and the meaning behind his words that inspired many American's. 3.Playwright Lorraine Hansberry based her play on Langston Hughes' poem "Harlem", because she felt that it exposed social criticism and how it effected the lives of many African American people. |
